First, prison will not be first choice. Studies shown that prisons are expensive to operate, can have severe negative results from over-crowding, and lead to abuse of inmates. For non-violent crimes, the judge can decide that the convict serves his term under house arrest. During this time, the convict will be required to wear an ankle monitor, and have a smartphone app installed. This app will track the convict when they leave the house. They must seek prior permission before leaving though. This will include appointments, grocery shopping, or school/work. The convict will not be allowed to go out for any other reason. If the convict violates his conditions of house arrest, he will be sent to prison to finish his term. Considering the convict is paying for his food and housing, he will receive full GBI benefits in addition to any work he will have to do.
Those that get incarcerated will be sent to a pod with other inmates to similar crimes. For example, all rapists will be in a pod, Child molesters will be in another pod, and so on. This will reduce the chance of inmate violence, and therefore makes the prison system safer. Every cell will have 2 bunk beds which means up to 4 inmates per cell. Each inmate will have a storage box that they can lock their personal belongings in. This will eventually be important. Each bed will have 1 USB charging port. This again will become important. Also, each cell will have a toilet/sink combination on one side, and a shower stall on the other side. The inmates can choose to shower during the lockdown times.
When an inmate is taken to the prison, they will be required to relinquish their clothing, and will receive bright orange jump suits with the words Kaldan DOC – Inmate on the back. The jump suit will have 2 pockets at the hips, and one on the left chest side. The upper pocket will be zippered so they can close their pocket. The only item they will keep from the outside world will be their ID card. The ID card will give them access to the commissary where they will still be able to acquire items through what is ever in their bank account. They however will not be able to send money to another person. This is to reduce the chance of illegal activity in the prison system. If family wishes to help the inmate, they can deposit money directly into the inmate’s bank account.
Each inmate will receive a thin mattress, a bed sheet, a standard sheet, and a linen blanket. The pod they will be sent to will have temperature control as set by the prison. The inmate will also receive a 1 liter plastic bottle for water which will be the only drink the inmate will be provided. The inmate will also receive a KCI I Series PDA which will be reduced in capability. The PDA will allow the inmate to read and reply to emails using their mail.ka email address. They will order items from commissary, and use it to watch videos or listen to music. While this might seem like they are promoting the prison lifestyle, keep in mind that they are still people, and they still have some rights even if they relinquished their freedom. The inmate will receive a roll of toilet paper, but will be responsible for any future rolls. They will be provided a bar of soap with additional soaps required to be purchased. They will receive a wash cloth, and towel for showering. For footwear, they will receive sandals for footwear unless they are required to have prescription type shoes. They will receive a reduced amount of money from the GBI program. This money will be required to receive items they will need. They will also receive a spork so they may be able to eat.
For meals, the prisoner will receive breakfast, lunch and dinner. No meal will constitute the need for a knife which will reduce the chance for violence. Prisoners that are on good behavior will be offered possible jobs. Prisoners can also go to trade school to help them become productive members of society when they are released. These programs are intended for rehabilitation rather than punishment.
